As sustainability becomes more important, buyers increasingly ask about certifications beyond basic food safety. Here are the main ones you may encounter:\n\nBSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative): A factory-level audit covering labor rights, safety, and environmental standards. Many European buyers require this.\n\nSedex / SMETA: Similar to BSCI, an ethical trade audit. Particularly common with UK and Australian retailers.\n\nFDA: US food contact safety standard for materials.\n\nLFGB: German food contact standard, considered one of the strictest in Europe.\n\nProp 65: California-specific warning requirement for certain chemicals.\n\nPositive Luxury: A UK-based sustainability certification. Not a legal requirement but a brand signal for environmentally conscious buyers.\n\nWhen sourcing, ask your supplier which certifications they already have. Most established factories will have the basics (FDA, LFGB, BSCI). Newer or niche certifications may require additional testing.\n\nKeep all certificates on file — your customers, retailers and customs may ask for them.
